Kick 2018's Butt with a Simple Content Audit

This is the time of year I have lots of calls and consultations with clients about how their content marketing has done in the past year and where we want to go in 2018.

It's a nice time to reflect on our progress while looking for ways to improve. These conversations are critical as a content marketing plan needs to be flexible, pivoting when necessary to meet your clients' and customers' interest, trends or new information.

It's also the time of year I talk to potential and new clients who need a "Content Audit." A Content Audit begins by evaluating all of a business's platforms on which they produce any sort of content: website, blog, social media, newsletters, etc. Current best practices are noted as are areas that are lacking or opportunities that are being missed. A brief landscape analysis is also done of other businesses in the industry to see what kind of content marketing they are using and using well. All of this is wrapped up into a concise report that includes suggestions for how to move forward into the next year. Essentially, it is a well-informed plan produced by an objective third party.

A Content Audit is a great way for your business to start the new year out on the right foot. It can help you identify blind spots, validate things you are doing well and gently nudge you in the direction you need to be going. Not every business needs a Content Marketer on a monthly retainer, but a once-a-year Content Audit may be a great option to help you get focused and ultimately - to kick 2018's butt.
